Business records, 1809-1835.

Consists of a letter book (1809-1835) and a cash book (1810-1819) kept by J. and J.F. Head and later just by Joseph Head. Much of the correspondence dates from the War of 1812 period. There are many comments on the difficulty of insuring shipments, the likelihood of their capture, shortages, increased prices, and the like. The firm traded with China and the West Indies as well as Europe and dealt with of great variety of products, including dry goods, rum, coffee, cocoa, lumber, flour, and rice. The cash book lends insight into the firm's money flow. It opens with a summary of the stock received from both John and Joseph at the formation of the partnership. Entries document finance charges, invoices, notes receivable, and notes payable.

J. & J.F. Head was a Boston, Ma. mercantile firm established by two brothers, John F. and Joseph Head, Jr. in 1810. Their father, Joseph, was also a Boston merchant. The firm was dissolved in 1813 after the death of John. He died while on a business trip in Cadiz. Joseph continued to operate a similar type of business until at least 1835.
